Opening Remarks

Leaders, fellow musicians, industry stakeholders, and esteemed guests,

Today, we gather to address a crucial issue that has long been overlooked in our music industry: the inclusion of musicians with disabilities. As the Director of the MS6 Disability Directorate, I am honoured to speak on behalf of the many talented musicians with disabilities who are eager to contribute to the rich tapestry of South African music.

The Current State

Despite the progress made in promoting diversity and inclusion, musicians with disabilities continue to face significant barriers in the music industry. From inaccessible studios and venues to lack of accommodations and opportunities, the obstacles seem insurmountable. However, we recognize that these challenges also present opportunities for growth, innovation, and creativity.

Benefits of Inclusion

Including musicians with disabilities in the music industry can have far-reaching benefits:

  • Diversity and Innovation: Musicians with disabilities bring unique perspectives, experiences, and talents that can enrich our music landscape.
  • Economic Growth: By tapping into this under-represented talent pool, we can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and increase revenue.
  • Social Impact: Music has the power to unite and inspire; by including musicians with disabilities, we promote social inclusion, challenge stigmas, and celebrate diversity.

Conducting Accessibility Audits

To ensure inclusivity, we must conduct accessibility audits in:

  • Studios: Ensure that recording studios are wheelchair accessible, equipped with adaptive technology, and staffed with trained professionals.
  • Performing Centers: Venues must provide accessible seating, ramps, and facilities to accommodate musicians with disabilities.
  • Venues: All performance spaces, including outdoor festivals and events, must prioritize accessibility and inclusivity.

Collaboration and Partnerships

To succeed, we must collaborate with musicians, industry stakeholders, and organizations:

  • Mentorship Programs: Pair musicians with disabilities with established artists and industry professionals for guidance and support.
  • Capacity Building: Provide training and workshops on disability awareness, accessibility, and inclusive practices.
  • Networking Opportunities: Create platforms for musicians with disabilities to connect, share experiences, and showcase their talents.

Economic Benefits

By uplifting musicians with disabilities, we can:

  • Increase Revenue: Tap into the estimated R1.5 billion music industry, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.
  • Job Creation: Support roles such as accessibility consultants, disability coordinators, and adaptive technology specialists.
  • Tourism and Cultural Exchange: Showcase South African musicians with disabilities internationally, promoting cultural exchange and tourism.

Call to Action

Let us join forces to break down barriers and create a more inclusive music industry:

  • Industry Stakeholders: Prioritize accessibility and inclusivity in your organizations and events.
  • Musicians: Support and amplify the voices of musicians with disabilities.
  • Government and Policy Makers: Develop and implement policies that promote inclusion and accessibility in the music industry.

Together, we can create a more vibrant, diverse, and inclusive music industry that celebrates the talents of all musicians, regardless of ability. Let us work together to make South African music a beacon of inclusivity and excellence.

Siyabonga, thank you.
